I joined South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) as an Emergency Care Assistance (ECA) in November 2011. This was a non-clinical role assisting the clinicians on Frontline Ambulances, this also included driving the vehicles when attending various emergencies within the South Coast Ambulance Service (SCAS) area.
In 2017 I started the CertHE in Paramedic Practice at the University of Portsmouth, which was an intense ten-month course for existing SCAS staff who worked frontline. On completion of the course, I registered with the HCPC as a fully qualified Paramedic.
During my 8 years as a Paramedic, I have continued to work frontline with SCAS, as well as a year and a half in Primary Care at HMP Winchester as one of three Paramedics.
In early 2022, I joined a few of my colleagues in a new role within in SCAS that saw us contracted out to local PCNs to help GPs with their home visiting service for acutely unwell patients who needed a face-to-face assessment on the day they called the surgery. At the beginning of 2023 we started the First Contact Practitioner course that was nationally recognised and a requirement for all non-GP clinicians who were working in Primary Care. On completion of the course at the end of the same year, we were advised that the SCAS contract would come to an end in March 2024. On this announcement, Eastleigh Health PCN offered a permanent role to my colleague and I, to join the team directly, which I did on the 1st April 2024.
Since joining the team permanently, we have expanded the role beyond urgent on the day visits to include routine visits, chronic illness reviews, vaccinations and a number of other requirements to meet the needs of our housebound patients.
